The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 34.3-mile rail-to-recreation trail starting in Abingdon, traveling through Damascus, VA and ending just past Whitetop Station at the Virginia-North Carolina border. This spectacular trail attracts over 100,000 visitors each year to partake of the natural and scenic beauty of this area. Backbone Rock is a solid pillar of rock which is a part of Holston Mountain. The ridge is surrounded by a bend in Beaverdam Creek, flowing directly below Backbone Rock. The creek offers excellent fishing and swimming. The rock is home to what is called “the shortest tunnel in the world.”
The Backbone Rock Recreation Area offers hiking, rappelling, camping, and fishing, including a hike with one trail leading across the top of the rock and another trail taking you to the beautiful 45 foot high Backbone Falls. |

No matter if you are a young rookie fisherman or aged expert, Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia have the best locations to cast your lines and have an unbeatable fishing experience. The Whitetop Laurel Creek ranks as one of the best natural freestone wild trout streams in the Eastern US. The creek offers backcountry adventures just minutes from the camp. Additionally, there are three TVA lakes nearby - Watauga, South Holston and Boone - and numerous marinas offering boat rental and fishing gear.

The world famous Appalachian National Scenic Trail, or simply the AT, stretches from Georgia to Maine, and it passes right through Damascus! Damascus, Virginia is a major resupply point on the AT and the key location to make your adventure a reality. Whether you are a “thru hiker” walking the entire AT in a continuous journey, “section hiker” piecing the entire AT together over years, or a “flip flopper” thru hiking the entire AT in discontinuous sections, Camp Ahistadi is the place to find an enjoyable overnight stay and find out why Damascus is known as the Friendliest Town on the Appalachian Trail.
